Tuesday Tales - Word Prompt Purple

Welcome to this weeks edition of Tuesday Tales to the word prompt Purple. My WIP is still untitled and is a first draft.

After showering and making herself presentable, she called Robbie who had been waiting for her in the Starbucks in the far corner of the lobby. The night before Jill had stayed up reading the pilot. You didn’t like it, she loved it. The main character had a lot of potential. After reading the character sketch on her, Jill knew she could get deeper into the character’s internal layers making her a character that would stand out.

This would be the first time Jill was involved in a project that had comedy elements entwined in its original genre of drama. She would have to watch how she addressed her comments to Robbie, not wanting to turn him off.  She hoped that he would like her comments and the extended character sketch she did on the main female character.

As she came down the glass elevator, she spotted Robbie sitting in comfortably in one of the chairs with two coffee cups sitting on the round glass table. The elevator stopped and she stepped out onto the marble floors.  She had the manuscript in one hand and the coat she bought yesterday over her other arm in the event Robbie wanted to leave the hotel. The moment their gaze met, he stood.

“You’re looking good. Please, sit down. I got you a coffee.”

“Thank you.” Jill placed the manuscript down on the glass table before sitting.
“I want to thank you again for breakfast this morning.”

“You’re welcome.” He chuckled. “In all honesty, I was trying to butter you up. While I waited for you to freshen up, which by the way you look gorgeous, I took a look at some of the work you have done on the soap. I have to tell you I am totally impressed with your work.”

“Why thank you.”

“Which leads me to ask, what you thought about the pilot?” he asked sitting back in the high back cushioned chair.

“I like the pilot a lot.” Jill took the manuscript off the table and took out a piece of folded paper out.

“I see you took notes.”

“Not really notes, but more of a more in depth character sketch of the female lead. I thought the pilot was really good. My only criticism is there was a little too much purple prose in the middle.”

“You are one honest woman.”

“That’s what has kept me in this line of work. I can’t see padding the truth. Usually if someone doesn’t agree, we always work it out.”

Robbie took a sip of his coffee, looked over his mug at Jill and warmly smiled. “I think you’re going to fit in perfectly on this project. But first, I want to see your notes.”

Jill handed him the piece of paper. She sat back in the chair crossing her legs with her black knit ugg boots not making her already short legs look any longer. In California she lived in flip flops or high   This could work, but it will take a lot of getting used to.
heel sandals and shorts and sundresses. Returning to New York in the winter meant layers of clothes, sweaters, jeans and all kinds of coats and leather jackets.

“I’m liking what I’m reading. Do you think you can make the male lead as multi dimensional as the female?”

“Yes. I think the pilot is the stepping stone of a series that can play on for multiple years. I have so many storylines, and secondary characters that could make this series take off.  It’s so different than anything that is one television.”

“I have to go into the Manhattan tomorrow to talk to my people. I’m sure they are going to want to meet you before they draw up a contract. Is this something you would be willing to do?”

“Without a doubt,” Jill replied lifting her coffee cup off the table. She was home a little over twenty-four hours and already she had a prospective job. Now all that was missing was her car, a place to live and deciding if she wanted to pursue getting to know Robbie on a more personal level.

“I have a few errands to run this afternoon.  Why don’t you take the pilot back and work on the male lead? I’ll be back around seven o’clock. We’ll grab something to eat and talk about your ideas.”

Robbie stood and handed Jill back the pilot and her character sketch. Jill stood taking them from him. “I’ll work on this during the day.”

“Let me run. The sooner I finish my errands, the quicker I’ll be back.” He slid his coat on and turned to leave, but changed his mind. Instead, he leaned over giving her a soft kiss on her lips.  “Catch you later.”

Tuesday Tales - Word Prompt Save

Welcome to this week's edition of Tuesday Tales to the word prompt Save. This is a work in progress, still untitled and is a first draft.

Jill stood at the window, with her arms folded against her chest looking out the window. She stood there for the longest time watching the planes take off and land. Taking a deep breath, she smiled in satisfaction. This was the first time in a long time she felt like she didn’t have the weight of the world on her back. It felt great to be back home, to her roots, where she was born and raised. New York, there was nothing like it.

First thing in the morning, she would go across the street to the mini shopping center and get herself a couple of sweaters and a few more pairs of jeans. In California, she lived in shorts and dresses. The only time she needed to get dressed was when they had a meeting with the big bosses.

Jill slid into her cotton nightgown; another thing to add to the list, flannel pajamas.   She always loved spending the day at Herald Square going in and out of the stores. The only difference this time is that she had the money to spend.
Back at the window she looked at the bright lights of Queens lighting up the streets. One of the first places she wanted to go once she settled in was Manhattan.

Shutting the off the lights, she slid her legs under the blanket. She turned her head toward the window so she could watch the planes, but her thoughts turned to Robbie.  Since she left him earlier, she blocked thoughts of him out of mind. Fighting with her thoughts sent her quickly to sleep.
                                                            * * *
A knock on the door woke her up out of a deep sleep. Slowly she got out of bed and walked into the bathroom to wrap herself in the thick white robe. She opened the door to the bellhop with a cart.

“I think you have the wrong room. I didn’t order anything,” Jill yawned.

“But I did. I’ll take it from here.” Robbie stepped into her doorway and rolled the cart into the room. “We have to start the day on a full stomach.”

“I don’t think I digested last night’s dinner.”

“Not to worry. I thought we’d have a nice breakfast and then go shopping to get you a winter coat. Damn is it cold out there.”

Jill pointed at herself.  “I’m not even dressed.”

“I have a few things to do this morning. While I make phone calls, that will give you a chance to shower and get ready.”

Robbie wheeled the cart over to the table by the window and placed the dish of fruit and muffins on the table. He lifted up the thermal coffee holder and poured the coffee.

“Thank you so much, Robbie.  I don’t know what to say. You really know how to surprise a girl.”

“I want you on my staff, so I’m going to woo you to the fullest, maybe even hold your arm behind your back until you sign the contract.” He chuckled. “All kidding aside, there’s something about you that tells me not to let you slip out of my fingers.”

“Is it lust?” she asked, knowing that’s exactly how she felt.

“Maybe, maybe not. We won’t know unless we try.” Robbie picked up a handful of blueberries and popped them in his mouth one at time.

“Thank you for this lovely breakfast,” she said lifting the hot mug to her lips. “I’m usually a two cup of coffee girl with a cereal bar on the way out the door.”

“Did you get a chance to read any of the screenplay last night?”

“Yes I did.”

“Did you read the whole thing?”

“No. I only read half. I wanted to save the other half to read this morning.

His face lit up. “And, what did you think?”

“We’ll talk about it later on, after I’m fully awake.”

Tuesday Tales - Hug

Welcome to this week's edition of Tuesday Tales to the word prompt Hug.  This is an untitled, unedited work in progress.

After Jill and Robbie finished dinner, Robbie ordered them cappuccino and an assortment of Italian pastries. Throughout dinner they talked about the restaurant and the places they had ate at in Los Angeles. They had both dined at the same places, and realized that one of the Christmas Parties they were both there. After that, they spoke of the actors and actresses they both knew.

The scent of garlic and tomato sauce lingered in the air. For a hotel restaurant, the food was very good. In California, she couldn’t find a decent Italian restaurant that made
homemade mozzarella. There was nothing like the taste of fresh mozzarella and a ripe New Jersey tomato.

The waiter placed their cappuccinos in front of them and the tray of pastries in the middle of the table. Jill reached for a sweet’n’low, pushed the whipped cream to the side and sprinkles it into her mug before stirring it with the small spoon.

“Watching your weight?”

“Not tonight, especially after seeing the pastries. I haven’t had a good cannoli since I left New York.”

Jill lifted her mug up to her lips and took a sip. She didn’t even want to tell him that the cappuccino tasted different in New York too. The water was made the difference; that she swore all these years. Nothing compared to New York water.

Robbie reached across the table and ran his finger along her top lip. He held up his finger laughing. “Looks like you left some whipped cream behind,” he said sliding his finger into his mouth.

Jill giggled. Who was this stranger she met on the plane? If she didn’t know any better, she’d say she knew him her whole entire life, yet she didn’t know a thing about him.

“A dollar for your thoughts.”

“You’re going for the big leagues. Usually it’s a penny for your thoughts.”

That small clique opened up the conversation.

“Would you like to know about the project I’m working on?”

“Yes I would, but I didn’t want to look desperate for a job.”

“Desperate?  No way. I’ve seen your work on the soap. Breaking into soap writing is very hard. You usually need to know someone in the field.”

“They came to me.  I was writing an ongoing story for the Staten Island Times every Thursday. One day I got a call at my desk and Mr. Cannon asked me if I would like to write for his show. I had told him I was interested, and his response was he had a one-way ticket to L.A. waiting for me at the airport. I packed a bag, and never looked back.”

“Interesting. I’d like to hear more. But first,” he stood, extending his hand. “I’d like for you to dance with me. I’m a sucker for a Frank Sinatra song.”

Jill took his hand in his and let him lead her out to the dance floor. At first they danced apart. But halfway through the song, Robbie placed his hand on her waist and brought her closer to him. She rested her head on his shoulder and he swept her across the small dance floor. At the end of the song, he hugged her and gave her a peck on her lips.

“Thank you for the dance.”

Jill wanted to reach up and touch her lips. As if on contact, his kiss rippled through her.  When they sat back down, she didn’t feel any awkwardness. Instead, she wanted to know more about him, more about the job he told her about on the plane.

“I thought if you didn’t mind, I’d like to hear more about the job opportunity you told me about on the plane.”

“I hope you didn’t think I used the job as a come on. I am serious.”

Jill didn’t want to tell him those thoughts had run through her mind. She always liked to give a person the benefit of the doubt, but in the television/movie world, there was always an ulterior motive behind every move.

“Give me a second,” he said opening up his messenger bag and taking out a manuscript. “This is the pilot that I just got finished shooting.” He handed her the manuscript. “Look it over and let me know if you are interested in being a part of the writing team.”

“I will.

“Either way your decision sways, I’d still like to get to know you better.”

Tuesday Tales - Picture Prompt

Welcome to this weeks edition of Tuesday Tales. Last week Jill and Robbie were conversing on the plane where Robbie offered Jill a job. After waiting for their luggage, they waited outside the terminal for a taxi.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE OTHER FABULOUS AUTHORS OF TUESDAY TALES

Robbie and Jill shared a taxi.  On the way to Jill’s hotel, Robbie asked if she would like to get a bit to eat since the food on the plane was disgusting. Without hesitation, Jill said yes, only with the agreement that he’d give her a chance to check in and freshen up.

Jill got herself settled into her room, before fixing her hair and touching up her makeup.  On the way down on the elevator, she tried to think of things she could talk to him about. Was this a date? If it were, she didn’t have a clue on how to act, what to say. She pinched her leg. Why was she thinking like that? This was going to be a business meeting.

The restaurant was located on the opposite end of the front lobby. She walked down the corridor following the scent of garlic into the restaurant. Robbie sat by the bar. When she caught his gaze, he slid off the chair and met her at the door.

“I’m glad you came.”

“Why wouldn’t I? When I make commitment, I never go back on it.”

“Neither do I.” Robbie slid his hand under her elbow and led her into the restaurant. Once they were seated, Robbie ordered a bottle of champagne.  “Since we are going to be working together, I thought we would celebrate, get to know each other better.”

Jill couldn’t take her eyes off the olive skinned stranger. She had to be sure he meant what he said about the job.  “I’d like that. I’d like to hear more about the job.” More about you.

The waitress came over and placed a basket of bread on the table and a platter of ziti with basil sauce.

“There’s nothing like discussing business over a plate of macaroni.” Robbie grinned.
